Exploring climate and biodiversity solutions across India
|
Dear IKI partners and friends,
As one of the world’s most populous countries and a hub of innovation, India plays a central role in tackling global challenges such as climate change. India is also considered one of the world’s most megadiverse countries, home to an exceptionally rich variety of ecosystems, species and genetic diversity.
This explains why India has been a key partner country for Germany's International Climate Initiative (IKI) since the funding programme was launched. In this edition of our newsletter, we take a closer look at our project work in India – from promoting energy storage solutions and improving wetland management to exploring ways of making freight transport more sustainable.
Last but not least, we have some exciting personnel news to share: meet the new leadership duo of the International Climate Initiative!
Best regards, Your IKI Communications Team

Turning Waste into Clean Energy
|
India is turning waste into opportunity. With IKI support, cities are converting biodegradable municipal waste into clean compressed biogas, backed by new investment guidelines and risk-sharing mechanisms. Stronger waste segregation boosts the circular economy, and around 400 waste pickers now have access to social security. Read the full story

Storage Technologies as a Key for the Energy Transition
|
India is accelerating clean power – and the IKI is helping ensure it reaches the grid. In Delhi, a 12 MW/25 MWh battery storage facility is being developed to store solar energy, improve grid stability and save around 12,000 tonnes of CO₂. Research networks and training programmes are also building storage expertise nationwide. Discover the details

Wetlands for biodiversity and climate action
|
Wetlands protect biodiversity, water and communities – and the IKI is helping safeguard them in India. Sustainable management plans for 11 wetlands, including seven Ramsar sites, are strengthening protection nationwide. A new assessment tool is now used at 65 sites, while training and restoration measures created income and climate benefits.

Collaboration for forest landscape restoration
|
Restoring landscapes while strengthening livelihoods: with IKI support, 20,000 hectares in India are being transformed through sustainable farming, agroforestry and improved grazing management. Around 10,000 smallholder farmers benefit from climate-resilient incomes, healthier ecosystems and stronger protection against droughts and extreme weather.

Transforming climate action through digital participation
|
How can cities respond to climate risks? In Visakhapatnam, the IKI is advancing digital and participatory climate action. New flood tools – from hazard maps to public dashboards – are strengthening resilience and transparency. The approach gained global recognition as a winner of the 2026 Bloomberg Global Mayors Challenge.
