Green Cooling: A Key to the Global Energy Transition
The IKI supports the transition from ozone-depletable substances to natural refrigerants.
Dear IKI partners and friends,
The world is getting warmer — and as temperatures rise, so does the demand for cooling. Yet increased cooling continues to drive emissions that further accelerate climate change. This is where the International Climate Initiative (IKI) comes in: climate-friendly cooling is a key building block in advancing the global energy transition.
IKI projects focus on technologies that use natural refrigerants such as ammonia, hydrocarbons and CO₂. Compared with conventional fluorinated substances, these solutions are far more environmentally friendly and contribute to both climate and ozone protection. Our shared goal is to establish sustainable cooling systems worldwide that are accompanied by energy efficiency, renewable energies and supportive political and financial framework conditions.
In this newsletter edition, we present projects that are putting this into action by supporting demonstration systems, training skilled professionals and using carbon market mechanisms to anchor sustainable cooling solutions in the market for the long term.
Enjoy reading! Best regards, Your IKI Communications Team

Climate-friendly Cooling with Global Impact
Cooling without harming the climate - what was considered a niche topic just over a decade ago has become a key lever in global climate action. Through the Green Cooling Initiative (GCI), the IKI has driven the transformation of a sector responsible for up to ten percent of global greenhouse gas emissions from 2012 to 2025. Discover some of GCI's milestones

How Carbon Credits Are Advancing Green Cooling
The IKI-supported Cooling Programme for Southern Africa is introducing energy-efficient air conditioners that use natural refrigerants to the market. Demonstration systems and trainings build local skills, while carbon market financing helps scale climate-friendly solutions across the growing cooling sector.

Green Cooling That Works in Practice
In Jordan, IKI's Cool Up Programme is demonstrating that climate-friendly alternatives work - and are ready for the market. The pilot installations are also influencing policy and markets. In this way, the IKI combines technical demonstration, capacity building and policy development - laying the foundation for a scalable transition towards climate-friendly cooling.
