Strengthening nature-based climate action
|
Dear IKI partners and friends,
Intact ecosystems play a vital role in mitigating climate change. Forests, soils, peatlands, as well as freshwater and marine ecosystems, absorb greenhouse gases from the atmosphere and help to lessen the impacts of climate change such as flooding and heatwaves.
However, as the climate crisis intensifies, these natural carbon sinks risk losing their ability to store greenhouse gases and may even become sources of emissions. Restoring ecosystems, adapting them to climate impacts and conserving biodiversity are therefore essential to strengthening their role in climate change mitigation.
In this edition of our newsletter, we take a closer look at nature-based climate action — one of the key priority areas of the International Climate Initiative. We highlight a range of IKI projects: from promoting the principle of planting the ‘right tree in the right place’ to exploring the potential of seagrass meadows, removing invasive plant species through collaborative efforts and mapping peatland landscapes.
We hope you enjoy reading this issue!
Best regards,
Your IKI Communications Team

Women and communities leading the way in FLR and nature-based climate action
|
Who is best placed to lead the restoration of Africa’s forests and landscapes and how do we best support them? The IKI-supported AREECA initiative explores this question, integrating traditional knowledge and participatory approaches, and placing women and community associations at the centre of forest and natural resource management.

Successful underwater research for the conservation of seagrass ecosystems
|
Seagrass meadows harbour a great diversity of species, store CO2 and secure the livelihoods of the local population. In the Philippines, the IKI supports research work to protect these ecosystems. A recent study utilising Baited Remote Underwater Video has provided valuable insights into fish assemblages and ecosystems in protected and non-protected areas.

Mapping the future of nature-based climate action
|
By supporting the Global Peatlands Initiative, the IKI has faciliated a global movement grounded in evidence, driven by cooperation and focused on results. As the climate crisis deepens, peatland protection offers one of the clearest paths forward—for the planet, people and nature. Discover how the Global Peatlands Hotspot Atlas contributes to this.

Prioritising native trees for restoration success
|
Which species, where and why? Answering these questions before starting tree planting initiatives is critical to harnessing trees’ full potential to fight climate change, support biodiversity and sustain livelihoods. Discover how an IKI project is supporting large-scale restoration in five African countries through more diverse, high-quality native tree species.

Promoting forest landscape restoration, climate action and human well-being
|
In the face of escalating climate challenges, forest landscape restoration stands as a powerful nature-based solution - building resilience not only in ecosystems but also in the communities that rely on them. In India, an IKI project proves that forest restoration is a holistic nature-based approach that goes far beyond ‘ecological repair’. In this way, 150,000 hectares of forest landscapes are to be restored by 2029.

From Kenya to Nepal: protecting forests from alien species
|
In Kenya and Nepal, forests that faced drought, degradation and invasions of alien plant species are springing back to life — thanks to the local communities that depend on them. With support from the IKI, people have taken the lead in restoring almost 300 hectares of damaged ecosystems, removing thousands of tonnes of invasive species, and planting and protecting tens of thousands native seedlings.
