10 years of sustainable urban development in the International Climate Initiative
|
Dear IKI partners and friends,
2025 marks an anniversary for the International Climate Initiative (IKI): the topic of sustainable urban development has now been a priority of our funding programme for 10 years, which is reflected in all four funding areas. To date, over 100 IKI projects in more than 50 countries in the Global South have focussed on sustainable urban development.
In this issue of the newsletter, we therefore present some examples of current projects in the IKI funding priority ‘Developing sustainable and climate-friendly urban and peri-urban areas’. This area offers a particularly high potential for impact, as cities are drivers of climate change and at the same time are under great pressure to adapt to the impacts of climate change, for example in dealing with heat island effects or water scarcity. Here you will find an overview of the funding priority.
IKI projects contribute to solutions for these challenges in a variety of ways, from nature-based solutions to the empowerment of women and digital toolkits. Our insight into the project work clearly shows that sustainable urban development requires the active participation of local communities and combines climate action and adaptation measures with an increase in quality of life.
Another way that IKI supports cities on their way to a low-carbon, resilient future is through the City Climate Finance Gap Fund, whose work is also described in this issue.
Enjoy reading!
Best regards,
Your IKI Communications Team
