The International Climate Initiative at COP29 in Baku
|
Dear IKI partners and friends,
At the UN Climate Change Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, the implementation of last year's resolutions on energy, mitigation and adaptation targets was on the agenda – and above all the negotiation of a new approach to climate financing. The questions of how to shape and finance the just transition were also among the topics discussed during the IKI High Level Event and the IKI Networking Event at COP29.
With the launch of the IKI Thematic Call 2024 at the High Level Event, the IKI ministries presented a concrete example of how the International Climate Initiative promotes solutions for current challenges in the field of climate action and biodiversity conservation. The nine thematic priorities of the call range from mobilising private capital, decarbonising energy-intensive industries and conserving critical wetlands to enhancing climate resilience and preventing conflicts.
In this issue of the newsletter, we highlight events and other IKI activities at the UN Climate Change Conference. Click here for further details on our COP29 topic page.
In addition, many IKI projects were represented at the conference with events that we are unfortunately not able to report on. However, we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved for their commitment.
Enjoy reading!
Best regards,
Your IKI Communications Team

IKI High Level event at the German Climate Pavilion
|
The IKI High Level Event took place under the motto ‘Pathways to transformative climate action, just energy transitions and innovative financing mechanisms’. The official launch of two IKI calls illustrated how the IKI contributes to concrete solutions.

How can we mobilise financial resources for climate action?
|
Networking is a success factor for the the IKI as the diverse experiences from the projects are shared at face-to-face meetings. Around 90 participants used the IKI networking event at COP29 to exchange ideas with representatives from the three IKI ministries. Among other things, they discussed how financial resources can be mobilised for climate action. In the informal part of the evening, participants took the opportunity to socialise with people from the IKI community.

The aim is to accelerate the decarbonisation of emissions-intensive industries and promote the development of low-emission industries in emerging and developing countries. In this article, you can find out how the IKI is involved – and what the ‘Global Pledge for Industry Decarbonisation Assistance’ is all about.

IKI’s support for the JETP in Indonesia
|
How the global energy transition can succeed is an ongoing topic at the annual UN climate change conferences. In this article, we use the example of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) in Indonesia to show what this path could look like for a specific country. The JETP is supported by several IKI projects in the fields of industrial decarbonisation, the just energy transition and sustainable energy financing.

Climate adaptation for global resilience and stability
|
Financing adaptation to the impacts of climate change contributes to strengthening the resilience of humankind and nature as well as to global stability. For this reason, the German government announced at COP29 that it would contribute 60 million euros to the Adaptation Fund through the IKI. The Adaptation Fund helps those countries which are most at risk from the climate crisis to prepare for the impact of global warming, thus averting future climate damage through anticipatory action.

Combining climate action and biodiversity conservation
|
One of the International Climate Initiative's unique strengths is its ability to combine climate action and biodiversity conservation. Financing for the protection of nature and biodiversity was therefore also a topic for the IKI at COP29. With this year's contribution of 8 million euros to the HIPCA (High Impact Partnership on Climate Action) Fund, which is provided via the IKI, Germany is reminding the international community of the need for stronger integration between international conventions on climate and biodiversity.
