Amidst the dynamic atmosphere, we seized the opportunity to unveil two pivotal aspects of our funding program to the climate action community: the presentation of the IKI Strategy and launch of the IKI Thematic Call 2023. Launch of the IKI Strategy up to 2030
|
The three IKI ministries presented the new “IKI Strategy 2030” in tandem to the 15th anniversary year of the funding programme’s inception. The strategy outlines priority fields of action with an aim of achieving the greatest possible leverage through supporting developing and emerging countries in ambitiously shaping and implementing climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation.

Now open! IKI Thematic Call 2023
|
This year’s thematic call focuses on the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions in the energy, industry, and mobility sectors as well as sustainable and climate-relevant biodiversity conservation. Under the call, IKI is looking for innovative and forward-looking projects under 13 thematic priorities. Project outlines can be submitted via the IKI online platform until 27 February 2024 (16:00, CET).

Closing the Climate Action and Finance gap
|
The high-level event emphasized the urgency to direct funds to vulnerable communities and necessity of adapting financial instruments to address the triple planetary crisis of climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss.This was further illustrated through two case studies by Indonesia and South Africa, highlighting the impact of strategic financial support in enabling states to embrace sustainable alternatives.

IKI Networking Event at COP28
|
Approximately 70 participants from the IKI community attended the networking event held at the margins of the Climate Change COP28 in Dubai, UAE. This provided an opportunity to engage in discussions with representatives from the three IKI ministries on the future direction of the funding program, based on the recently launched IKI strategy while at the same time commemorating the 15th anniversary of IKI.

Boosting private investments in Renewable Energy projects
|
At COP28, the German Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) pledged €33 million from the IKI to support private investments in renewable energy and efficiency projects in emerging and developing countries. This aligns with the groundbreaking commitment of nearly 120 countries to collectively triple global renewable energy capacity and double energy efficiency improvement by 2030.

€20 Million grant to support Ukraine's Energy Transition
|
At an event in the margins of COP28, Germany’s Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), the European Investment Bank (EIB) and Ukraine’s Ministry for Restoration agreed to sign a €20 million grant for the Renewable Energy Solution Programme (RES). This funding will bolster renewable energy initiatives in Ukrainian municipalities, contributing to energy independence in public institutions.

Supporting climate finance in Kenya
|
The European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) unveiled a pioneering climate finance best practice initiative. This effort is designed to enhance the involvement of Kenyan financial institutions in funding climate-related investments. It also seeks to empower commercial banks to mobilize essential finance for attaining a net-zero economy and fortify the climate resilience of Kenya's financial systems. Read more ...

Joint effort for mangrove conservation in Africa
|
Minister Steffi Lemke (Germany) and Minister Mariam Almheiri (UAE) announced the signing of a letter of intent at COP28 for a partnership in the field of mangrove conservation and sustainable management for African nations. As a member of the Mangrove Alliance for Climate (MAC), Germany is also supporting the Mangrove Breakthrough which aims to conserve 15 million ha of mangroves by 2030. Read more ...

IKI Small Grants – 5th call coming up soon
|
The IKI Small Grants program is set to launch their next call for proposals in 2024. Aligned with the IKI initiative, these grants offer funding ranging from €60,000 to €200,000 in support of climate and biodiversity projects for small organizations in ODA-eligible countries.
